What is GTA V on PC?

Grand Theft Auto V is Rockstar's open-world action game set in Los Santos and Blaine County. On PC you get the full Story Mode with three switchable protagonists — Michael, Franklin, and Trevor — and the live-service GTA Online. The Steam release dropped in April 2015 and continues to receive Online updates: Heists, Cayo Perico, Drug Wars, Bottom Dollar Bounties and more. Story mode supports a thriving single-player mod scene; GTA Online requires a Rockstar account and disallows mods.

Why it’s still a top buy

  • Three protagonists, three perspectives, one heist-driven story you can actually finish.
  • GTA Online with regular content drops — heists, races, businesses, vehicles.
  • Visual longevity. The PC build still looks great with mods like NaturalVision Evolved.
  • Steam achievements, cloud saves, and Family Sharing where eligible.

How to buy and start playing

  1. Open the official Steam page using the Buy on Steam button above.
  2. Purchase the base game (often discounted) — Online is included.
  3. Install ~115 GB on an SSD; first launch authenticates with the Rockstar launcher.
  4. Pick Story Mode or GTA Online. Online has a 30-player session cap; story mode is fully offline.

System requirements (PC)

Minimum: Windows 10 64-bit, Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q6600 / Phenom 9850, 4 GB RAM, GeForce 9800 GT 1 GB / Radeon HD 4870 1 GB. Recommended: Core i5-3470 / FX-8350, 8 GB RAM, GTX 660 2 GB / HD 7870 2 GB. For 1080p Ultra in 2026 you'll want a current-gen GTX 1660 / RX 6600 or better and 16 GB RAM.

Critical & player reception

1stargames editorial summary — these notes reflect widely reported critic and player sentiment, not direct quotes or verified individual reviews. For scored critic reviews see Metacritic or OpenCritic; for player reviews, open the game’s Steam page.

  • Critics: One of the highest-rated games of its generation on release (2013 console, 2015 PC), with broad critical acclaim.
  • Players: Consistently among Steam’s most-played titles a decade on, praised for its story mode and the longevity of GTA Online.
  • Common criticism: GTA Online monetization and cheaters in older lobbies draw complaints, and the install is large (~115 GB).

Editor verdict

Buy. GTA V on Steam is the path of least friction: Story Mode and GTA Online both work, sales are frequent, and the PC mod scene is unmatched. With GTA VI on the horizon, this is the perfect time to (re)play V.

  • Two games in one (SP + Online)
  • Active Online support
  • Massive single-player mod scene
  • Big install (~115 GB)
  • Online cheaters in old lobbies
