What is Clair Obscur: Expedition 33?

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is the debut from Sandfall Interactive, a small French studio with veterans from Ubisoft and Asobo. It’s a turn-based RPG — but combat blends classic JRPG turns with real-time parries, dodges and aimed shots. You lead Expedition 33, a band of artists and soldiers sailing toward the Paintress’ tower in a Belle Époque-inspired world where she annually erases everyone of a certain age. Story, art and music are the headline reasons it became 2025’s critical breakout.

Why it deserves your attention

  • Combat that respects your reflexes. Parrying isn't optional — it changes incoming damage and unlocks counter-finishers.
  • Class-defining party. Each member has Pictos and Lumina equipment that swap between deep, distinct builds.
  • Belle Époque art direction. A painterly, melancholy world that doesn’t feel like another anime template.
  • Original soundtrack. Lorien Testard’s score belongs on the same shelf as Yoko Shimomura’s best.

How to buy and start playing

  1. Open the official Steam page using the Buy on Steam button above.
  2. Purchase Expedition 33 (Deluxe Edition adds the OST and digital art book).
  3. Install ~55 GB on an SSD; the launcher offers DX12 and a benchmark on first boot.
  4. Start on the standard difficulty; Story mode reduces enemy timing windows if parry isn't your thing.

What players & critics say

Camille LaurentCritic · Gameblog-style★★★★★
My RPG of the year, by a wide margin. Sandfall built a Belle Époque world that's both dreamy and devastating, and the combat is a thrill from hour one to the credits.

Hybrid turn-based / real-time combat finally clicks here — parrying isn't a gimmick, it changes how every encounter plays. The OST alone deserves an award.

Art direction is in the same conversation as Persona 5 and FFVII Remake. The story sticks the landing — twice.

Performance was rough at launch but Sandfall patched it; on a 4070 at 1440p with DLSS Quality it's a smooth 90+ fps now.

Editor verdict

Buy. Expedition 33 is the rare genre debut that lands with story, combat and music all firing — and the post-launch patches fixed the rough edges. If you want a single-player RPG to remember 2025 by, this is it.

  • Original setting & tone
  • Combat with real timing
  • Outstanding soundtrack
  • Linear by design
  • No multiplayer / mods (yet)
